Hiwassee River-- Appalachia Tailwater

The Hiwassee is an interesting fishery, it has a wider variety of insect life than any other tailwater in the state of Tennessee. We usually will have a chance for some dry fly fishing on any given day throughout the summer, you just have to be in the right place at the right time. Starting this year in the 2011 season the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency (TWRA) http://www.state.tn.us/twra/ has implemented a Delayed Harvest (DH) program on the Hiwasee River. This is the only DH program in the state located on a tailwater fishery. The DH section will be from Appalachia power house downstream to the railroad tressell in between  http://www.hiwasseeoutfitters.com/ and the state park boat ramp in reliance.

The Hiwassee River in East Tennessee’s southern most corner, is our home water and we look forward to sharing the experience with all of our clients. The Hiwassee River is an excellent tail water fishery. With trout fishing being the main focus of most anglers. In the spring and summer months the dry fly fishing can rival the best in the country. Trips are scheduled on a basis of water flow for the river. For our float trips we will be using drift boats or catarafts. Theses types of boats are the safest way to travel and fish on the river. We also have plenty of opprotunity for wade fishing here as well, depending upon the generation schedule.

The Delayed Harvest Regulations for the Hiwassee River.
season starts on Oct 1 -- Feb 28
artificial lures with single hook only
catch and release, all fish must be released

Be sure to use caution when wading below dams TVA will change the generation schedule without notice.

Hiwassee River Stripers

If you like to catch big fish then the summer run of stripers on Hiwassee is something that you should look into. Striper fishing on the Hiwassee is comparable to big game hunting. You may not catch a high number of fish, but the ones that you will get into are large fish. The average striper that we take on the Hiwassee are anywhere in the 18-25lb range with many larger fish mixed in. This is a great fight on any type of tackle, but it is unforgetable when you get one on the fly.
On the Appalachia tailwater we start the chase in june and fish on through october. When the run really gets going is dependent upon the water relesase schedule and temperature downstream.
