The annual spring time low water releases on the Hiwassee marks the start of some really fun fishing for us in the Southeast Tennessee region. The trout fishing is on fire on the upper sections as the caddis and Hendrickson’s continue to hatch with consistency. The lower stretches is where an adventurous angler can target and usually find a nice mixed bag of trout, white bass, walleye, and the occasional striped this time of year. The white bass have started to move up the river for their spawning season and the walleye are still showing up here and there. Over the course of the next few weeks it will be hard not to find them just about anywhere in the river.
6wt & 7wt Rods with sinking lines is the way to go when targeting the whites and wallies. Be prepared to stay mobile and search around and you will be rewarded with a fun day of fishing.
Here is a shot of Matthew with a nice female white bass for the other day. This young man had picked up streamer fishing pretty well. He was throwing a 7wt rod with a 200 grain depth charge line.
